BARNUM- The Barnum Bombers boy’s baseball team was still seeking its first win on the season when they took on AlBrook Monday afternoon. It was another struggle for the Bombers, who fell to the Falcons 18-4 in this non-conference match up.

The Falcons scored first on the afternoon. Kolten Karppinen hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to set the tempo for the Falcons. Offensively, the Falcons continued to roll. The third inning proved to be the fatal blow to the Bombers as the Falcons exploded for five runs to build the AlBrook lead to 7-0.

Taylor Carlson singled and scored in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 7-1, but another explosive inning in the fourth put the game out of reach for the Bombers. Albrook sent thirteen batters to the plate, and with three hits and five walks given up by the Bombers pitching staff, it all figured into an 8-run fourth inning for the Falcons. Barnum added one run in the bottom of the fourth to end the inning with the Falcons leading 15-2.

“We seem to always have one bad inning,” head coach Tony Bender told Northland Sports Online, “It seems we have that one inning every game where the wheels come off and we can’t recover. We are scoring runs averaging over six runs a game; eventually we will put it all together.” Bender also commented, “We have had chances to win a few games. We had a chance against Esko to pull out a win and also against Moose Lake-Willow River but we couldn’t quite come through.”

AlBrook added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it an 18-2 game. Justin Newman of the Bombers hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to close out the scoring at 18-4. Kolten Karppinen finished going 3-for-4 with 3 runs batted in; he also scored three runs in the victory. Josh Johnson was 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs for AlBrook also. Cody Anderson was the winning pitcher for the Falcons, giving up four hits and striking out four. AlBrook improves to 3-0 on the season.

Taylor Carlson was 2-for-3 for Barnum with a run scored and Justin Newman finished 2-for-3 with two runs batted in. Barnum falls to 0-6 on the season. The Bombers fell Saturday to Cherry High School in a game played at the Metrodome by a score of 13-6. Taylor Carlson hit a two-run home run and Bobby Minkkinen added two hits in the loss. Barnum is in action Tuesday at home against Cromwell. AlBrook faces BEST on Tuesday.
