Cloquet Sweeps East

For the first time since 2007 the Cloquet lumberjacks have beaten the Duluth East Greyhounds in girls’ volleyball at Cloquet High School on Tuesday night. The Lumberjacks, who open their season with an impressive sweep over the Greyhounds, face another touch match-up in their next contest.

All the games of the match were very close with Cloquet coming away with a 25-18 victory in the first game of the match. The Greyhounds battled closer in the second game but it was Cloquet again coming away with a four point 25-21 win as the Lumberjacks went ahead 2-0 in the match. The same 25-21 score was the final in the third game of the match as Cloquet earned the home sweep over Duluth East.

The Lumberjacks were led by Samantha Westendorf who finished with 5 kills, 8 digs, and 15 set assists, Alex Oakes added 14 set assists, 5 kills and she also finished with 5 ace serves. Kassidy Steen chipped in with 6 kills and 2 blocks, while it was Olivia Mayasich who had 7 kills and 2 blocks for the Lumberjacks.

The Greyhounds Mandy Kurosky finished with 12 kills and she also added 3 ace serves for the Greyhounds, and it was Kaylea Atkinson who finished with 5 kills and she had an impressive 6 ace servers on the night.

The lumberjacks who start the season 1-0 will be back in action next Tuesday night when they will host Grand Rapids in a non-conference battle. The Greyhounds now fall to 0-3 on the season and they are also back in action on Tuesday when they will face the Hermantown Hawks at Hermantown High School.
