WIAC Announces Academic Honors
SUPERIOR, WIS.: The Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) has released its Scholastic Honor Roll for the 2012-13 academic year and UW-Superior landed 144 student-athletes on the list. To qualify for the WIAC Scholastic Honor Roll, student-athletes must achieve a grade point average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale.
Conference-wide, nearly 50% of the more than 5,000 student-athletes in the WIAC garnered academic honors.
“I may be biased, but I don’t think that the student-athletes on our campus get enough credit for the time and effort that they put into being their best on the court, field or rink as well as in the classroom,” said athletics director Steve Nelson. “To have that number of our student-athletes achieve a grade point average above 3.0 in some difficult academic programs says a lot about the young people that our coaches are bringing in to UW-Superior. We are extremely proud of the job that they do.”

The WIAC also presented an all-academic award to institutions that had a grade point average for its student-athletes that was equal to, or greater than, the grade point average of the overall student body. Yellowjacket student-athletes received the honor for the seventh straight year and for the 11th time in the last 12 years by having a cumulative grade point average of 2.985. The overall student population at UW-Superior earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.963.
UW-Superior was one of six WIAC schools to receive the award, joining UW-La Crosse, UW-Platteville, UW-River Falls, UW-Stout and UW-Whitewater.
“We take a lot of pride in the fact that our student-athletes have the grade point average that they do and sort of set the standard for our student body,” Nelson said. “I like that we accomplish what we do in the classroom, and hopefully what our student-athletes do inspires other students. If they see someone excelling as athletes, earning a high grade point average volunteering in the community and also doing something like holding down a job, then maybe they will strive a little harder to meet the standard that we are setting.”
Individuals who were named to the honor roll receive a certificate of achievement, while universities that receive the all-academic award will receive a plaque to mark the honor.
