Former Cloquet star athlete Taylor Sautbine was impressive at a recent track meet held at UMD. Sautbine, a freshman at Bemidji State University, won the hurdles while also finishing strong in the 200 meter dash and helping a Beaver relay team to a second place finish.

“I am very happy with my performance,” said Sautbine on Monday. “I finally feel back in the groove of things. Outdoor season just started not too long ago and I am already running the times I finished with in high school.”

A 16.04 clocking was plenty fast enough for Sautbine to nab first in the hurdles and she also was fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.34. The 4×100 relay team, of which Sautbine is a member, finished second in their event as well.

“Bemidji is a great place and I love it,” explained Sautbine. “It has been a really great experience and things are working out great.”

Despite low numbers for the Beaver track team, Sautbine has confidence in their abilities on the track and field.

“Our team is very low in numbers, but we get out there and compete,” commented Sautbine. “The UMD meet was the best one so far as a team for us.”

As for the transition from high school to college? Well, to say the least it has been an eye-opener.

“College sports are way more intense,” Sautbine remarked. “We have a bigger warm-up and we have a harder work out and we go to the weight room every day after practice. In college you can’t sluff off. You have to go to practice and get done what needs to get done.”

If early season times are any indication the freshman sensation should have a strong career for the Beavers.
