The second annual DAYBA Border Battle took place Saturday night. It featured some of the best players from Minnesota and Wisconsin squaring off this year at Romano Gymnasium at UMD. The series was again won by Wisconsin in both the boys and girls game, but it was indeed a night where several players shined.

Before the girls game, the 2010 Barnum girls basketball team was honored for winning the state championship in class single A. Three of the Barnum Bombers on the championship team represented the Minnesota team very well.

The girl’s game was a close contest, but in the end it was the Wisconsin all-stars defeating the Minnesota stars by a score of 80-72. The Minnesota all-stars led most of the contest until well into the second half when Katrina Newman came down on a player and rolled her ankle.
The Wisconsin girls took advantage and came back to win by eight.

Katrina Newman and Abby Ray of Two Harbors led the Minnesota All-Stars with 17 points each, Newman hit three three-pointers as part of her game high 17 points. Sarah Myhre added 6 points off of a couple three pointers. Leah Nordvall did not score in the game, but did a superb job of handling the ball for the Minnesota All-Stars. Caitie Zepczyk led the Wisconsin All-Stars with 15 points in the win.

The boy’s game was a shootout to say the least, with both teams firing from all cylinders. The final score would attest as the Wisconsin Stars beat the Minnesota All-Stars 115-88. Nick Toland of Duluth East led the Minnesota stars with 18 points, RaRa Jones of Cloquet scored 8 points and Michael Swartz from Hermantown finished with 6 points in the loss. The Wisconsin All-Stars were lead by Jordan Reetz of Fall Lake.
