CLOQUET – The Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College women’s softball team opened league play with a pair of losses at home against Rainy River Community College on Tuesday night. The Thunder fell 14-8 in game one and then lost a tight 4-2 affair in the second game.

“We just made way too many mistakes in the first game,” said third year head coach Kerry Rodd. “In the second game we got a nicely pitched game from Dana Letica, but we left 11 runners on base and we left the bases loaded twice.”

Letica finished with a six-hitter in game two, but the Thunder were unable to produce a run in the bottom of the seventh when they had the bases loaded with one out.

“That happened a couple of times in the game,” explained Rodd. “The timely hit just didn’t come and we just didn’t finish the deal.”

Megan Johnson had two hits and scored both runs in the final game for the Thunder.

“Megan is a gifted athlete and she played a great game for us in the second game,” Rodd said. “She had the two hits and then stole four bases including home to really give us a spark.”

Game one saw the Thunder give up three runs in the first inning on two errors, but then bounce back with a five run inning themselves to take a 5-3 lead. However, RR then took control with a big third inning in which they scored six runs en-route to the win.

“The game was quite honestly a mess for us,” Rodd suggested. “We made base running mistakes, we had errors and our pitchers struggled to find the strike zone. It was like the tone was set early from a defensive standpoint and then we just couldn’t stop the bleeding.”

The Thunder got a pair of his from Kortney Lindberg and Anna Engelmeier in the loss.

FDLTCC will be at home on Friday against Vermillion CC at 3pm and 5pm.
