The Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College women’s fast pitch team will open regular season play at Braun Park today with a double header against Rainy River Community College. Game one is set to begin at 3pm this afternoon.

“Rainy River is well coached by Dieter Humbert and they are always a tough team to play,” explained Thunder coach Kerry Rodd. “We had a chance to iron out some kinks after we played in our pre-season games at the Dome in Rosemount a couple of weeks ago so we’ll see if we’ve improved.”

The Thunder roster is chalk full of local talent with players from Cloquet, Esko, AlBrook, Carlton, Moose Lake-Willow River, Proctor, Duluth Central, Hermantown, Cook County, Rush City, Cass Lake and Ogilvie.

“We really pride ourselves in the fact that we are trying to build the core of our team from our local talent pool,” mentioned Rodd. “We want the high school players from our area teams to realize that we are a great choice when it comes to college and continuing to play softball.”

Looking to lead the Thunder will be returnee’s Megan Johnson of Esko and Steph Engelmeier of Hermantown. The Thunder also brought in a strong freshman group that includes; Kortney Lindberg of Esko, Anna Engelmeier of Hermantown, Lisa Muehlberger of Duluth Central and Dana Letica of Proctor.

“We’re anxious to get out and play a game again,” commented Rodd. “It seems like we’ve been waiting for a month since our last game, so this will be a fun day regardless of wins and losses.”
