DULUTH – Ideally, section tournament time is when you peak and play your best basketball. The Esko Eskomos appear to be doing just that. Esko beat a never-say-die Rush City team 71-55 at Romano Gym on Saturday to advance to the semi-finals of the 2010 Section 7AA girls basketball tournament.

By the second round of playoffs, scoring points alone typically isn’t enough to garner a win when every team there is capable of playing good basketball. One key to Esko’s win over the Tigers was every player’s extra effort.
Keely Deadrick led all scorers with 24 points for the Eskomos. She also came up huge on the glass Saturday, just missing a double-double with a team leading 9 rebounds.

Amanda Bergstedt scored 15 points, including three three-pointers. This mark is spot on her 14.04 points per game average, but she also helped her team by dishing out five assists. Savanna Trapp, while scoring five points and six rebounds, made her biggest contribution by leading the Eskomos defensively with an eye popping 10 blocked shots. This is nearly double of her 5.5 per game average.

Scoring for the Eskomos were previously mentioned Deadrick with 24 and Bergstedt with 15. They were followed by Alyson Glumac with 9 points, Lydia Pelletier 7, Katie Tonner with 6, and Julianne Carley and Trapp with 5 points each.

Jami Friday and Jenna Schepper led Rush City, both in double figures with 17 and 12 points respectively.

The win moves the 23-5 Eskomos into the Section 7AA semi-finals at 7:45pm on Tuesday at UMD. There, they will take on the #1 seed 19-7 Deer River Warriors in the late game of the double header. The 6:00pm semi-final game features the #1 Braham Bombers versus the #2 seed Two Harbors Agates.
