East tops Hunters

In a boys and girls basketball doubleheader Friday night it was the Greyhounds who picked up wins in both boys and girl’s action as the Greyhound boys defeated the Hunters 64-51, while the girl’s game was not as close as the Hunters fell 76-48 at East high School.

The Greyhounds broke away in the second half of the girl’s contest Friday after the Hounds were leading 39-31 the Greyhounds outscored Denfeld 37-17 to come away with the 28 point victory.

Mia Anderson led the Greyhounds with 17 points, while her teammates Hannah Johnson poured in 15, and Liz Libbon finished with 13. Lexi Hill paced the Hunters Friday night as she finished with 14 points and it was Ashley Taipale who added 12 in the loss.

The Greyhounds improve to 2-8 overall and they will play at Bemidji on Thursday night, The Hunters fall to 3-8 and they will play at Hibbing on Tuesday night.

The boy’s game was a little closer Friday night as the Greyhounds won the boy’s battle by 13 points but it was the Greyhounds who built a 15 point lead at the break with a 30-15 lead as they rolled to their first win on the season.

Ryan Downing paced the Greyhounds with 17 points, and Chaz McBeath added 15 in the victory. The hunters were led by Kjell and Sjon Randa who each finished with 13 points for the Hunters.

The Greyhounds picked up their first win to move to 1-8 overall but fell on Saturday night to Cloquet as they go to 1-9 overall. The Hunters fall to 0-8 and are seeking their first win of the season. Denfeld will host Barnum on Tuesday night while the Greyhounds will take on Esko in another tough matchup Tuesday night at East High School.
