The Hermantown Hawks picked up a huge section win Tuesday night when they defeated the Hibbing Bluejackets, giving the Hawks a firm hold on third place in the sectional standings. The Hawks beat the Blue Jackets 70-63 in Hermantown on Tuesday.

Grand Rapids has already wrapped up the number one seed and Cloquet will finish the regular season with at least a tie for the number two seed. Hermantown has one game remaining and can set themselves up with a win over Proctor on Friday night.

Hermantown jumped out Tuesday night to an early lead and built a 36-22 halftime lead. The Hawks then withstood a second half run by Hibbing, still coming away with the seven point win. Colton Zacharias hit two free throws down the stretch to seal the victory for Hermantown.

“This was a hard fought, tough win for us,” head coach Michael Pothast told Northland Sports Online. “Zacharias hitting those two clutch free throws sealed the win for us and that was big. Swartz and Andersons 19 points were big for us as was Jake Lesar who finished with a double-double.”

The Hawks were led by Corey Anderson and Michael Swartz who each had 19 points. Jake Lesar finished with 15 points, Zacharias added 12 points in the win and Spencer Johnson ended with 5 for the Hawks. Hermantown improves to 12-12 on the season and end their regular season on Friday when they host Proctor.

Hibbing was led by Logan Coleman with 20 points on the night. His teammates Ezra Coughlin added 10 points and Matt Tourville ended with 8 in the loss. Hibbing falls to 11-11 and play at Duluth Denfeld on Thursday.
