The Cloquet girls basketball team had to look back several years since they had defeated Duluth East in a girls Basketball match up. In fact, you must go back to 2001 before you can have a Cloquet win over East. The Greyhounds had 17 straight wins over the Jacks until Tuesday night when the Lumberjacks shot them down.

The Lumberjacks came out and took the lead from the opening tip and never looked back as they defeated the Greyhounds by nine points at home. Cloquet jumped out to a 22-10 lead midway through the first half and led at halftime by a score of 31-26. Cloquet again came out strong and continued to play inspired basketball in the second half to pick up the non-conference win.

“I am speechless” head coach Jeff Ojanen told Northland Sports Online. “It was an entire team effort tonight. That we played a full game not just one half, we came out focused and it was a great win, and extra special when you beat Duluth East.”

The Lumberjacks were led by Annabel Morrisroe, who finished with 28 points and 13 rebounds on the night. Brianna Henagin added 9 points and six assists in the win. Katie Pappas, Krista Schmitz and Carri Zeadow all finished with 5 points, and Sarah McMillen had 1 point to round out the Lumberjack scoring.

Alex Freeman finished with 13 for the Greyhounds, while Shamika Hopkins and Anne Mahoney both ended with 8 for Duluth East. The Greyhounds fall to 9-16 on the season and finish the season Saturday when they host Esko. The Lumberjacks improve to 10-14 on the season and face Providence Academy on Thursday night at home. Then, on Friday, they close out the regular season at International Falls.
