Barnum Girls Pick Up Two More Wins

BARNUM – The Lady Bombers continued to roll Saturday as they came away with the 68-53 win over the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks. On Friday, it was a huge win over Silver Bay 109-13 that assured Barnum of at least a tie for the Polar League Championship with a week remaining in the regular season.

Friday, the Silver Bay Mariners were under fire from the very beginning of the game as Barnum rolled out to a 73-3 lead at halftime. Barnum continued to whomp on them to win this Polar League contest at home. Katrina Newman led the Bombers with 29 points Friday, Leah Nordvall and Daron Mainville contributed with 15 each, Katie Myhre added 13 and Jenna Zymslony also had double figures with 10 points.


Saturday afternoon saw the Bombers hosting the two time defending Section 7AAA champion, the Grand Rapids Thunderhawks. Barnum jumped out to an early ten-point lead in the first half, but Grand Rapids would not go away easily. The Thunderhawks pulled to within four points before the Bombers built up an 8-point (27-19) lead at halftime.


The second half saw Grand Rapids come out strong and fight in the first several minutes, cutting the Bombers lead down to one point at 34-33. However, it would be the last time Grand Rapids got that close. The Bombers started firing away from the outside, hitting six three pointers in a four minute span to build the lead to as high as 18 points.


The Thunderhawks closed the final margin to 15 at the end by hitting a few three pointers in the final minutes. Jessica Newman led the Bombers Saturday in scoring with 25 points. Her sister Katrina Newman added 20, Katie Myhre hit four three pointers to give her 12 points on the afternoon, Leah Nordvall chipped in with 8 and Claire Rodgers ended with 3 points.


Sarah Stejskal had 23 for Grand Rapids, Jessi Corrick finished with 19, Jenna Gillson chipped in with 8, Stacey Perrault ended with 2 and Kelly Niles had 1 point in the loss.


Barnum improves to 22-2 on the season and hosts Hinckley-Finlayson on Tuesday in the final regular season home game. Then, on Friday, they play at Cook County in the last game of the regular season. Grand Rapids falls to 13-10 overall on the season and end their regular season next Thursday when they play at Bemidji.
