The Hermantown Hawks sure could have made things easier on themselves when it came to their opening game of the boys hockey season on Friday.  A day after Thanksgiving the Hawks, the #1 ranked Class A boys team in the state, opened up against previously ranked #1 in Class AA Wayzata in Hermantown.  The Trojans received goals from six different players and parlayed a strong second period into a 6-1 victory over the Hawks.

After taking a 1-0 first period lead on a goal by Chase Heising, the Trojans rolled off four straight tallies in the second period to streak ahead 5-0 after two periods of play.  A goal by Jack Sorenson at 4:42 made it 2-0 for Wayzata, but then back-to-back power play goals by Alex Stevens and Max Zimmer at 6:54 and 12:56 respectively, pushed the lead to 4-0.  Before the period ended the Trojans got another goal at 14:15 from Billy Duma to push the lead to 5-0.

Wyatt Aamodt scored for Hermantown on a power play just 2:30 into the third period with Nate Pionk and Zach Kramer notching the assists and giving the Hawks at least a glimmer of hope, but that all faded into the background when Nathan Dingmann scored at 9:03 to give the Trojans back their five-goal lead.
Hermantown tossed 27 shots on Trojan goaltender Vaughan Ahrens who made 26 saves.  Wayzata put 32 shots on Hermantown goalie Adam Smith.
