Early in the second period on Friday it appeared as if the Denfeld Hunters were in top shape against one of the states top Class A boys hockey teams the Benilde-St. Margarets Red Knights.

The Red Knights came into the game ranked #2 in Class A, but found themselves in a whole lot of trouble as the Hunters led the game 3-1 very early in the second period.  That all changed by the time the second period ended and the Red Knights proved worthy of their lofty ranking by streaking to an 8-3 win over the Hunters.

Nick Thompson gave the Hunters a 1-0 lead in the first period with a goal that was assisted by Ryan Rukavina and Reid Lemker at 14:38, but before the period ended the Red Knights respond with a goal from Peter Hemboid and the game was even at 1-1.

The Hunters stormed out of the gates in the second period with two quick goals the first coming at 1:21 on the power play and the second goal just nine seconds later at 1:30.  The power play tally was scored by Evan Lafontaine with Thompson assisting and the second goal of the period, which made it 3-1 Denfeld, was scored by Wyatt Wutz on another Thompson assist.

The second goal appeared to wake up the Red Knights who ran off six straight goals against Denfeld and goalie River Alander to take a 7-3 lead after two periods of play.  The player that spurred the Red Knights on in the second period was Spencer Naas who had the natural hat trick in a one minute and 22 second time frame of the second period.

The only goal of the third period was also scored by Naas of the Red Knights who cruised to the 8-3 win.
The Red Knights managed to put 33 shots on Denfeld’s Alander who made 25 saves, while Jalen Long finished with 17 saves for Benilde-St. Margarets.
