NSO area basketball recap for Tuesday, January 12

Boys Basketball

Esko 60 Floodwood 50

The Esko Eskomos overcame a slow start to build a halftime lead of 27-17. The two teams played evenly in the second half, with the end result being an Eskomo Polar
League win
at home Tuesday night.
Esko’s Jackson Lindquist and Adam Eskuri led a balanced scoring attack with 14 points each. Josh Belden led the Polar Bears with 14 points.

Ashland 63 Cloquet 55

Ashland led the Lumberjacks at half time and then withstood a rally in the second half to gain Lake Superior Conference win at home. Down 32-16 at halftime, Cloquet would came back from behind. However, Chad Calcaterra’s 23 points wasn’t enough Tuesday night to muster up a win.

MLWR 66 Barnum 58

Austin Jacobson scored 30 points on Tuesday night for the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels to give them this
Polar League
win in Barnum. The two teams were tied at halftime, but ML-WR pulled away for the eight point win. Nick White led the Bombers in scoring 21 points.

Cromwell 55 McGregor 47

The Cromwell Cardinals led by eight points at the break and matched hosts McGregor basket for basket in the second half to gain the Polar League win on Tuesday night. Ryan Hutar had a big night, scoring 16 points for Cromwell. Garrett Collins led McGregor with 16 also on the night.

Duluth Central 71 Proctor 46

Duluth Central jumped out to a 19 point halftime lead and never looked back as they cruised to the twenty-five point win on Tuesday at Duluth Central. The Trojans were paced by Ben Poppen, who hammered in 23 points on the night for the Trojans. Anders Voss led the Rails in scoring with 11 points.

Virginia 78 Hermantown 60

Anthony Perala scored 20 points Tuesday night to push the Blue Devils to the non-conference win at home. Virginia jumped out early and led at the break by ten (32-22). They extended the lead in the second half to eighteen. Colton Zacharias led the Hawks in scoring with 20 points.

AlBrook 69 Orr 63

The AlBrook Falcons improved their winning streak to five straight games when they downed the Braves by six points on Tuesday night. Kolten Karppinen led the Falcons with 25 points on the night. The Braves were led by Perry Drift, who finished with nine points in the Orr loss.

Girls Basketball

Bemidji 76 Cloquet 62

In a battle of two great low-post players Tuesday night, it was Kayla Hirt of the Bemidji Lumberjacks scoring a game high of 40 points in the fourteen-point win over Cloquet. Annabel Morrisroe led the Cloquet Lumberjacks, scoring 31 points on the night in the loss.

Carlton 59 Wrenshall 20

The Carlton Bulldogs jumped out to a 39-8 lead at halftime and went on to win this Polar League contest by twenty-nine points. Sarah Aili led all scorers on the night with 19 points for the Bulldogs. Maria Burcar led the Wrenshall Wrens in scoring, finishing with 13 points in the loss.

ML-WR 39 Proctor 34

Coming off of a loss to the Barnum Bombers on Monday, the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels rebounded Tuesday night by winning the non conference match up at home. The Rebels led by seven (19-12) at halftime and went on to win by five. Maddy Adamczak led the Rebels with 12 points, while Abbey Lundeen scored 10 for the Rails.

Hermantown 52 Superior 47

The Hermantown Hawks outscored the Spartans in the second half to go on to win the Lake Superior Conference matchup at home Tuesday night. The Hawks and Spartans were tied at the break, but timely shooting led Hermantown to the win. Jessica Love scored 13 points on the night for Hermantown.
