An impressive four-goal third period helped to propel the Moose Lake Area boys hockey team to a 7-2 win over the St. Paul Saints in a tournament in Silver Bay on Monday night.

Adam Ryan and Chris Gassert gave the Rebels a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals at 5:58 and 11:37. Unfortunately, St. Paul scored a goal just 1:30 into the second period goal to cut the lead to 2-1. However, the Rebels responded just 24 seconds later with Ryan’s second goal of the game to push the lead to 3-1 with the assist going to Rejean Carlson. The Saints narrowed the gap before the second period ended with a goal by Doug Appel at 5:58, but that was the last puck to get behind Rebel goalie Austin Lanoue, who finished with 21 saves.

The third period was all Rebels as Carlson scored at 1:05, Tyler Cisar scored at 3:08, Ville Mattala added a power play tally at 13:20 and Carlson finished off the scoring at 14:42 with his second goal of the game.

Both Carlson and Ryan had two goals in the game and both also added an assist for three point nights.

The Rebels outshot the Saints 46 to 23 and only a strong performance by St. Paul goalie John Bretzman kept the game tight through two periods of play. MLA pounded 18 shots on Bretzman in the final period to help secure the win.
