The Barnum Bombers had not lost a regular season game in almost two years. As a matter of fact, regular losses are so uncommon for Barnum it’s hard to believe they actually do lose on occasion. But that’s what happened Saturday at the MN Breakdown Tip-Off Classic. The Bombers fell to one of the best Class AAA teams in the state, the New Prague Trojans by a score of 56-51.

The Bombers entered Saturday’s game as the top ranked team in class single A, while the Trojans were ranked third in class 3A. So this contest was a match-up that was highly anticipated. The Trojans came away with a hard-fought 56-51 win over the Bombers.

The Tip-Off Classic features twenty-four teams playing in twelve games at Hopkins High School in Minneapolis. Twenty two of the twenty four teams are ranked in the state basketball polls. The Tip-Off classic also features 40 of the top girls basketball players in the state of Minnesota.

The Trojans used the size advantage inside on Saturday as Maggie Weiers and Hannah Strop, two player over six feet, were dominant inside. They also controlled the boards for the Trojans. Stop finished as the Trojans top scorer, tallying 18 points. Weiers finished second for the Trojans with 16 points.

Katrina Newman led all scorers in the game, finishing with a game high 23 points for the Bombers. Despite an inside size disadvantage, Barnum stayed close throughout the game thanks to terrific outside shooting. Newman’s 23 points were scored in a variety of ways from all over the court. Jessica Newman and Sarah Myhre chipped in with nine points each, while Katie Myhre had six and Kelsey Wickstrom added four.

The Bombers fall to 1-1 on the season and will be in action again on Monday when they play the Carlton Bulldogs in Carlton. The Trojans improve to 2-1 on the season and are home Tuesday as they face Waconia
