The Esko Eskomos opened their girls basketball season with a 44-43 win over Crosby-Ironton on Tuesday night. The Eskomos withstood a late surge when the Rangers fought back, but still fell short, in the opening game of the season for both teams.

Esko jumped out early in the game and built a halftime lead of 25-16. The Eskomos continued to roll in the second half, leading the entire game.
Katie Swanhorst brought the Rangers back in the second half by scoring eight of her eleven points on the night in the final minutes of play.

Amanda Bergstedt and Keely Deadrick each scored 13 points on the night to lead the Eskomos in scoring. Deadrick also contributed three 3-pointers for Esko. Julianne Carley finished with 5 points and Lydia Pelletier added 4 points for the Eskomos. Esko’s freshman post Savanna Trapp scored 3 points and used her 6’7” height advantage to block seven shots on the night. Alyson Glumac, Danielle Salo, and Katie Tonner each finished with 2 points in the Esko win.

Swanhort’s 11 points paced Crosby-Ironton, while Jana Anderson added nine in the Ranger loss. Crosby-Ironton will be in action again on Thursday when they travel to Wadena to take on Wolverines. The Eskomos look for a 2-0 start on Thursday when they play at Floodwood in a big Polar League match-up. The Polar Bears were the Section 7A runners-up last season and have key returning players this season.
