The Hermantown Hawks opened their 2009-2010 girls basketball season against the two time defending Section 7AAA champion Grand Rapids Thunderhawks, and until the last second of the game it seemed as the Hawks would open with a victory on the road, it would not be however, as junior guard Jessi Corrick spoiled the Hawks chances, hitting a 3-pointer as the buzzer went off to give the Thunderhawks the 59-58 win.

Hermantown used balanced scoring Tuesday night with the Hawks having nine players scoring. Grand Rapids used Corrick as the main weapon; she led all scorers with 33 points on the night as the Thunderhawks start the season 1-0. Corrick’s 33 points was a big step forward considering the Thunderhawks had two all state players graduate last season.

Mary Neumann led the Hawks with 11 points on the night. Jess Love had 10 points in the loss, Carmen Bergstedt finished with 9 points, Nicole Neimi, Melissa Madison, and Rachel Hoium all finished with 6 points. Ally Dieryck and Lydia McMillen each scored four points and Andrea Enockson rounded out the Hermantown scoring with 2 points on the night.

The Hawks start the season 0-1 and will be in action again on Friday when they take on the Denfeld Hunters at Duluth Denfeld High School. The Grand Rapids Thunderhawks will be in action also on Friday, facing the defending Section 7A Champion Bigfork Huskies at home.
