CLOQUET – Despite being outshot in the game, the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team pounded the Chisago Lakes Area Wildcats 10-2 on Tuesday night at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.

The Lumberjacks wasted little time in jumping to a 1-0 lead. At 5:17 of the opening period CEC defender Kalie Shevich intercepted an outlet pass and found Melissa Clark in the right circle and then Clark rifled a shot on the short side of CLA goalie, Amanda Budde, giving the Jacks the lead. Jessie Ryan would score barely over a minute later on another pass from Shevich and at 13:37 the Jacks got a shorthanded goal from Courtney Esse with Ryan assisting. Ryan scored three times in the game.

Just 22 seconds into the second period Ryan scored unassisted to make it 4-0 and Callie Halverson followed with the first of her two goals making it 5-0 with assists going to Kelsey Woods and Megan Nelson at the five-minute mark. CEC sophomore center, Dalyce Gustafson scored after Carley Esse intercepted a pass just outside the Wildcats blue line and passed the puck to Ryan who found Gustafson zipping into the zone. Gustafson snapped a shot that beat Budde through the legs for a 6-0 lead at 8:26. The Wildcats cut the lead to 6-1 on a goal by Megan Lushanko–a small, but quick forward. CEC went back up 7-1 before the end of the second period when Carley Esse notched a magnificent shorthanded goal on a rush up ice with just 30 seconds remaining in the period.

The Wildcats stormed the CEC net at the outset of the third period and it paid off as Allison Borgstrom beat Jacks goalie Nicole Lund in a wild scramble in front of the net just 1:28 into the period. However, the Jacks would get goals from Courtney Esse, Ryan and Halverson as they won the game going away.

The win for CEC improves their record to 2-2 on the season after the Jacks had opened with a win over Forest Lake and then dropped a pair of games to Benilde-St. Margarets and Stillwater.

CEC goalie Nicole Lund was strong in the nets with 39 saves on 41 shots while the combination of Amanda Budde and Amanda Shoquist made 19 saves on 29 shots for the Wildcats.
