Melissa Clark and Jesse Ryan each scored a pair of goals and Courtney Esse chipped in with three assists as the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team opened the season with a 5-0 victory on the road at Forest Lake.

“We started very slowly and got very few shots,” said CEC coach Dick Bartholdi. “For some reason we were flat and part of that may have been the hustle by the Rangers who had their first game on Saturday.”

The Jacks cranked things up in the second period and pounded the Rangers with shots in taking control.

“We had a great forechecking period in the second period,” commented Bartholdi. “That put the game away for us and then in the third period it was much like the first period, but Sarah Gustafson held up for the shutout.”

The Jacks will take on Benilde-St. Margaret on Friday in the Twin Cities and then lay at home against the defending Class AA state champions, the Stillwater Ponies, on Saturday at 3:00 in the afternoon.
