CROMWELL – This Saturday was a night for the Cromwell boys football team to shine, despite the wind and rain.
It was a complete overall win as the Cardinals downed the Mariners by a score of 50-8 as they opened the Section 5 nine-man football playoffs.

Cromwell opened the scoring on a 3-yard touchdown run by Jordan Smith and when the two-point conversion failed Cromwell led 6-0. Jordan Suhonen would score the first of his four touchdowns when he ran for 34 yards. This gave the Cardinals a 13-0 lead after the Smith extra point was good.

John Schlauter caught a 48-yard touchdown pass from Suhonen to start the scoring in the 2nd quarter; a successful extra point kick made it 20-0. Suhonen then scored again on a 13-yard touchdown run and a failed two-point conversion put the game at 26-0. The Cardinals scored again before halftime when Nolan Wester caught an 8-yard pass from Suhonen. Rounding out the second quarter, Dustin Byer ran for the two-point conversion to make it 34-0 at the break.

Cole Johnson added a 3rd quarter touchdown run and a pass from Suhonen to Tyler Sulkowshi for the two–point conversion, making it 42-0. Silver Bay then scored their only touchdown to make it 42-8. However, Alex Hakamaki added one final score and a Russ Arnold run would finish the scoring at 50-8.

The Cardinals, with the win, improve to 8-1 on the season and will host AlBrook on Saturday night in the section semi-finals. AlBrook defeated Hill City 36-16 in an earlier game. Silver Bay finishes their season at 1-8 overall.
