Saturday marked the beginning of the 2009 football playoffs across the northland.
Leading the action was Section 5 nine-man football with three quarterfinal games on the docket.

AlBrook’s masterful ariel attack was on full display in their 36-16 win over Hill City with senior quarterback Cody Anderson putting the ball up 49 times. Anderson completed 33 tosses for 371 yards and figured in on all of the Falcons scoring, passing for three touchdowns and a conversion as well as running for two touchdowns and two conversions. Tony Williams scored on touchdown receptions of 3 and 16 yards and Kolten Karppinen caught a 14 yard touchdown toss to go along with Anderson’s touchdown runs of 1 and 2 yards.

Fourth seeded Floodwood advanced to a Saturday matchup with #1 McGregor by beating Cotton 40-0. Jeremy Matvey and Amos Blanton each rushed for two touchdowns while Zach Heggedahl rushed for one and returned an interception for another in the Polar Bears first round win.

Cromwell hit the playoffs running with four different Cardinals scoring five touchdowns in their first round 50-8 win over #7 seed Silver Bay. With the win, the #2 Seed Cardinals advance and will host #3 seed Albrook on Saturday, a game that will pit the Cardinals powerful running attack against the high flying passing game of the Falcons.
