CARLTON – The Carlton Bulldogs broke a scoreless tie with 6:00 left in the game by scoring a touchdown. They then held on to beat Chisholm 10-8 on homecoming night in Carlton.

In a game that saw both squads have a first half touchdown taken off the board by holding penalties, both teams headed to the locker room at halftime with the score tied 0-0.

Field position was the main battle in a third quarter which, like the first half, ended without either team able to put points on the board.

The trend of moving the ball up and down the field without scoring ended when, with 6:00 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, Trevor Rychlak scored on a 4-yard run. And after a Chaise Jokinen extra point, the Bulldogs led 7-0.

After not scoring for three and a half quarters the Bulldogs scored on their very next possession by taking advantage of great field possession made possible by a Zach Anderson interception. After moving the ball to the 12-yard line, Carlton once again called on the versatile Jokinen who nailed a 29-yard field goal, putting the Bulldogs up 10-0.

The Jokinen field goal would prove to be the difference in the game. On Chisholm’s following possession, after two long pass plays, Eric Paine put the Bluestreaks on the board with an 8-yard toucdown run. Paine then passed to Faitala Muasau to complete the two point conversion to cut Carlton’s lead to 10-8. That, however, would be as close as the Bluestreaks would get when, after a final defensive stand, the Bulldogs were able to celebrate the 10-8 homecoming win.

As the lack of points would indicate, Carlton played great defense on the night. Defensive coordinator Ryan Lindstrom was proud of his squad, telling NSO after the game, “I thought our guys played great defense tonight. They (Chisholm) ran a lot of counters and we showed great poise and discipline, consistently staying at home and making the play.”

Carlton’s rushing attack was led by Jacob Gran, who tallied 86 yards on 21 carries. Rychlak, who the Bulldogs relied on heavily in the fourth quarter after losing Gran to a knee injury, finished with 69 yards on 23 carries. Colton Godbout also chipped in with 8 yards on one carry.

Jokinen led the Bulldogs in receiving with two receptions for 31 yards. Joe Thompson added one catch for 7 yards.

The Friday game culminated a week packed full of homecoming activities. Carlton changed its longstanding tradition of holding homecoming ceremonies during basketball season to the earlier football season. The halftime ceremonies saw Derek Frear crowned as king and Hallie Raisanen decorated with the queen tiara.

Carlton will look to continue their winning ways when they travel up the shore to take on Cook County on Wednesday at 7:00pm.
