Esko Stops Deer River on Homecoming Night

ESKO – It was an exciting night for the Esko Eskomos as they evened their season record by beating long time conference rival Deer River 26-13. With the win, the Eskomos are back at five hundred with a record of 3-3.


Esko came out and dictated the tempo of this contest as head coach Bill Hudspith continued to create different formations and offensive sets that would keep Deer River guessing defensively all night.


Esko used a plethora of personnel in the win Friday with twelve different running backs having a carry in the win. The passing game also featured six different receivers on the night for Esko.


Max Reinertson put the Eskomos on the scoreboard in the 1sr quarter when he scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. After the kick, the Eskomos led 7-0. Damon Benham then answered for Deer River with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter. Benham scored on a 3-yard run and the game would be tied at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.


Jacob Anderson put Esko in front to stay when he scored on a 27-yard run.The extra point was blocked and the Eskomos led 13-7 at the break. Esko then scored on a 6-yard touchdown run by Phil Wirtz in the third quarter and with the extra point Esko led 20-7.


Another 6-yard touchdown run by Esko’s Richard Jubie would put the Eskomos in front 26-7 and it would stay that way until the final minute when Lucas Benson scored on a 33-yard run, ending the game at 26-13.


The win moved Esko into third place in the Section 7AA standings. They will have a chance to move up again next week when they face Rush City on Wednesday. Deer River falls to 2-4 on the season and will host Duluth Marshall next week.
