Barnum Finishes Sixth At Duluth East Tourney

The Barnum Bombers Volleyball team fell from their undefeated title on Saturday as they finished sixth in the Duluth East invitational on Saturday. Barnum’s sixth place finish was among twelve teams in the tournament with participation from Wisconsin and Minnesota schools.


Barnum opened the tournament with a loss to the hosting Duluth East team. East won the two games 25-16 and 25-17. The second game of pool play had the Bombers facing Minneapolis Washburn and the Bombers avenged their first loss of the season by downing the Millers in two straight by 25-14 and 25-10.


With Barnum going 1-1 in pool play, the Bombers would then take on the Anoka Tornadoes, taking them three games to down Anoka 25-22, 19-25 and 18-16. The Bombers then squared off against Washburn, Wisconsin in the fifth place game. Washburn topped the Bombers in two straight with scores of 25-17 and 25-15.


Katrina Newman finished with 29 kills in the tournament, as well as 25 digs. Jessica Newman ended with 46 set assists and Candice Paulson added 6 ace serves. Jenna Zymslony added 10 kills and 21 digs for Barnum.


With the sixth place finish, the Bombers now sport an overall record of 15-2. They next play at East Central on Monday and on Tuesday they take on the hosting Moose Lake-Willow River.


Forrest Lake won the Duluth East Invite by beating Duluth East in the championship match. Grand Rapids finished third and Hill Murray fourth. Moose Lake–Willow River finished tenth in the tournament with their only win coming over Minneapolis South 25-14 and 25-19. The Rebels, going 1-3 in the tournament, see their overall record now at 3-14.
