Thursdays Northland volleyball matchups marked the beginning of October and the final month of the regular season for high school volleyball. With the 3 game win over Floodwood, the Barnum Bombers have put themselves in good position to win the Polar League title.


In a pivotal game, Barnum defeated Floodwood at home, handing the Polar Bears their first Polar League loss of the season. The Bombers won by scores of 25-20, 25-23, and 25-21. Key for Barnum was their ability to contain Floodwood star Alissa Autio, limiting her to 8 kills and 5 blocks. Katrina Newman displayed her versatility with 12 kills and 14 digs.


Carlton remained hot by beating Wrenshall in 3 games. Tayler Carpenter and Katie Bloom had 9 and 7 kills respectively for the Bulldogs.


The Cloquet Lumberjacks, who have been playing very good volleyball as of late, won their third game in a row, defeating Duluth Denfeld in three games. The Lady Jacks dispatched Denfeld by scores of 25-20, 25-18, and 25-17. Katie Schultz and Maddie Kiehn both came up big with 9 digs apiece. Katie Konietzko was right behind with 8 kills and 2 blocks.


Cromwell made the trip to Grand Marais to take on Cook County. While the Cardinals were very competitive, they lost to Cook County in four games by scores of 24-26, 15-25, 25-23, and 19-25. Ashley Collman led the Cards with 11 kills, while RaeAnn Odegaard added 14 digs.


Proctor fell to Duluth Central in three close games. The Rails fell by scores of 23-25, 21-25, and 24-26. Aubrey Knox was terrific on defense in the loss, recording 16 digs


Esko rebounded from its four game loss to Barnum in a big way, toppling Silver Bay in three quick

games, 25-4, 25-8, and 25-15. Keely Deadrick had an all around good night clocking in with5 kills, 6 ace serves, and 16 set assists for the Eskomos.


The Hermantown Hawks jumped out to a two game lead, then held on to beat Ashland in four games by scores of 25-14, 25-13, 18-25, and 26-24. Ashland, who was previously unbeaten in Lake Superior Conference play, falls off the pace in the race for the LSC championship. Hermantown along with Cloquet remain the only teams unbeaten in conference play. The Hawks were led by Samantha Kallberg with 15 kills.
