The Minnesota Gopher women’s soccer team will take on even a more northland flavor next season. Amanda Bergstedt, a senior at Esko High School, will attend the ‘U’ and play for the Gophers after making a verbal commitment to the school this week. Bergstedt will join former Cloquet player, Jes Vork, who is a red shirt freshman for the Gophers this year.

This fall Bergstedt is the leading scorer in the northland and just last week she pumped in four goals in a game further solidifying her position as one of the premier forwards in the northland.

The announcement about Bergstedt is the second announcement of a NSO area player moving on into Division I ranks next season. Cloquet’s Chad Calcaterra announced last week he will attend the University of Colorado on a DI basketball scholarship next season. It is very seldom that the NSO coverage area has more than one DI athlete per year, with the exception of boys and girls hockey, and this year there are already two. To further mark the status of Bergstedt’s achievement is the fact that in the history of soccer at Esko, Carlton and Cloquet the only other player to make DI is Vork.

According to some reports Bergstedt is one of four players being recruited for the incoming 2010 freshman class.
