Sept 26

Look out! The Cloquet girls soccer team is on a mid-season roll that could have major consequences for other teams in the playoffs. The Lumberjacks shut out Hermantown 4-0 on the road Saturday, remaining unbeaten in their last six games and improving their record to 8-2-1.

Cloquet came out of the chute putting pressure on the Hawks, getting four goals in the first half from four different

people. Cloquet head coach Dustin Randall told NSO, “We worked hard and created opportunities for some good luck, which came our way today.”

Scoring for the Lumberjacks were Courtney Esse, Emily Johnson, Sadie Micke, and Haley Bassett.

Coach Randall was pleased with his team’s ability to distribute the ball and get everyone in the action.
He explained, “Our depth really showed with 4 different girls getting goals. If teams want to key in on one or two of our players and try and shut them down, we have other options, and have showed the ability to move the ball around to other players and create chances.”

With the win, the Lady Jacks put themselves in great position to win the Lake Superior Conference. Randall stated, “We knew that beating this team today meant we have beat every team in our section that we have played.” Grand Rapids and Duluth Marshall are the two remaining teams that the Lumberjacks have yet to face. They host Grand Rapids on Tuesday and finish out the regular season against Duluth Marshall at home on October 13th.

Today’s victory was the third consecutive shutout for Cloquet goalie Kaitrin Rathe and the sixth this season. The Lumberjacks have outscored their opponents 25-3 during their current five game winning streak. Coach Randall talked about the position the Jacks are in now, stating “I am very pleased with our performance today, our progress moving forward through the season into the final stretch, and where we are at right now.”
