Sept 23

The theme for Tuesday night’s volleyball contests was to play five games. Barnum needed five to keep their perfect season alive. Carlton fell to Floodwood in five games, and Cromwell used the full five games to get past Moose Lake – Willow River, giving head coach Lori Wester her first home win.

Barnum traveled to Grand Marais on Tuesday and it may have been the ride up the shore that took something out of the Bombers. Whatever it was, Barnum started out slow, losing the first two games 22-25 and 19-25. By the third game they came to life, winning the next two games by scores of 25-18 and 25-20. When the fifth and final game arrived, the Bombers were in high gear, winning the last game of the match by a dominating 15-1 score. Katrina Newman led the Bombers by recording 18 kills and 20 digs. Christina Nelson registered 12 kills and 13 digs for Cook County.

Cromwell defeated Moose Lake–Willow River for the first time in five years at home in a match that went all five games with scores of 22-25, 26-24, 25-27, 25-11, and 15-13. Emily Hendrickson had 7 digs and was 15 for 15 serving to help lead the Cardinals. Moose Lake-Willow River was led by Alyssa Jusczak with 10 kills.

Carlton traveled to Floodwood where they lost a tight first game by a score of 23-25. They rebounded to win the next two games by a score of 25-17 in both games. The Bulldogs, however, could not quite get a win in game four, losing 25-27 and game five by a score of 12-15. Alissa Autio was nearly unstoppable for the Polar Bears with 21 kills and 14 blocks.

In a bit less intense match, Proctor lost to Duluth East by scores of 9-25, 9-25, and 20-25.

Esko won its tenth straight match, dispatching Wrenshall in three games by scores of 25-10, 25-8, and 25-9. Kyla Handevidt led the way with 6 kills while Keely Deadrick had 10 set assists.
