The Barnum Bombers continued this fall with a very impressive string of victories in high school volleyball. On Saturday, in the championship game of their own tournament, the Bombers needed an impressive comeback in the first game to defeat Cook County.

The Bombers trailed 24-17 in the first game of the championship match, but they reeled off nine straight points to come back and win by a score of 26-24. Barnum won the second match 25-20 and continued on to win the championship game on Saturday afternoon.

“We didn’t play our best volleyball of the season Saturday,” head coach Corina Newman told Northland Sports Online. “We had so many unforced errors,” Newman stated. “One of our strong suits is serving, yet we struggled serving all day.”

The Bombers went undefeated on the day, going 2-0 in pool play and downing East Central 2-0 in the semi-finals to advance to them to the championship round. Cook County also went 2-0 in pool play and defeated Cromwell in the semifinals, advancing them to the finals as well.

East Central downed the Cromwell Cardinals 2-0 to capture third place. Both East Central and Cromwell were 1-1 in pool play. Silver Bay and Wrenshall also competed in the tournament. St. Paul Johnson and Aitkin both dropped out of the tournament at the last minute.

Barnum now improves to 10-0 on the season and are in action again on Tuesday. They have a rematch of the championship game and will be up in Grand Marais taking on Cook County. Cromwell is now 5-8-2 and will host Moose Lake-Willow River on Tuesday at Cromwell High School.
