The CEC Boys soccer team traveled to Duluth Central on Saturday and came up a bit short. Central’s Derek Johnson gave the Jacks a bit of a problem. Johnson’s hat trick was the difference in the game as Duluth Central defeated CEC by a 4-2 margin.

Johnson got an early start on his day by scoring just 3 minutes into the game, giving the Trojans an early 1-0 lead. Johnson was assisted on the goal by Jake Samulson.

The 1-0 scored held up until the 39th minute when Evan Komarek scored, putting Central up 2-0.

Jarad Weeks had one first half save for the Lumberjacks, while Lock had 4 for the Trojans.

In the second half, Dan Toivonen’s hard work paid off for the Jacks when he put them on the board with a goal in the 47th minute. Josiah Barrett credited with the assist.

Central’s 2-1 lead lasted until the 72nd minute when Johnson struck again, giving Central a 3-1 lead. Three minutes later Johnson scored his third and final goal for Duluth Central.

Landon Straub, assisted by Hunter Leon, scored for the Jacks, cutting the Central lead to 4-2. However, it was too little, too late with the 4-2 score holding up for the final margin of victory for the Trojans.

In the second half, C-E-C got 4 saves from Weeks for a game total of 5. Lock turned in 3 second half saves, bringing his game total to 6.

With the loss, C-E-C falls to 3-3-1 on the season. The Lumberjacks will travel to Two Harbors on Tuesday to take on the Agates in a 5:00 pm matchup.
