Sept 10

In a rematch of last year’s Section 7A girls’ soccer championship, the Cloquet Lumberjacks hosted the Hermantown Hawks Thursday evening at Hilltop Park.

Although both teams scored a couple more goals than in last year’s section finals matchup, the results after two overtimes were the same with a tie. Unlike last year, when Hermantown won the section title in a shootout, this regular season game remained tied.

Katie Pappas scored in the first half and Jessie Ryan scored two second-half goals for the Lady Jacks. Chelsea Cossin, Mikayla Sich, and Julia Gilbert scored Hermantown’s goals. Both teams failed to score in either of the overtime periods, with the game ending in a 3-3 tie.

The two teams will face off again in the regular season on Sept 26th in Hermantown. Judging by the great seasons both teams are having, a third meeting in the playoffs could be in the cards. If that were to happen, the odds would remain greater, with the tie not being an option.

Cloquet will be back in action Saturday when they host Duluth Central at 11:00 am. Hermantown travels to Hibbing to take on Hibbing/Chisholm, also at 11:00am on Saturday.
