The Esko Eskomos are off to an excellent start this volleyball season. After beating Virginia in four games Thursday night, they now sport a 4-1 record with the only blemish being a tough fought five-game matchup against Hermantown.

On Thursday, the hosting Eskomos used four games to defeat Virginia, extending their winning streak to three games only five games into the season.

Esko started out well and had the Blue Devils on the ropes after two games by scores of 25-15 and 25-20. Virginia would not go away easy, however, taking game three to the limit and staying alive, winning by a score of 27-25. Esko would dash any hopes the Blue Devils had, buckling down and winning game four and the match with a 25-17 victory.

Kayla Handevidt, the lone senior on the Eskomo squad, took her leadership responsibilities very seriously. Handevidt led her team to victory with an amazing 20 kills and 7 ace serves. Her winning effort also included 9 blocks.

However, Handevidt wasn’t the only Eskomo who came to play. Lydia Pelletier recorded 8 kills and 7 blocks and Stephanie Bandelin had 9 kills. Meanwhile, Alyssa Bergstedt supplied 15 digs. Keely Deadrick was tough at the net with 4 blocks in addition to running the offense with 26 set assists. Deadrick got help for Breann Thompson who tallied 12 set assists.

Esko will be back on the court Tuesday, when they travel to Moose Lake-Willow River in an important Polar League matchup against the Rebels.
