Thursday’s NSO Area Volleyball Recap

High school volleyball continued around the Northland on Thursday with all ten of the NSO area teams in action, giving fans some very entertaining games to watch.


AlBrook picked up their first win of the year by beating Mesabi East in straight sets of 25-7, 25-20 and 25-15. Abbi Otis and Chelsea Abrahamson led the Falcon efforts with seven kills and 10 set assists respectively.


Barnum remained unbeaten by overpowering Cromwell in straight sets as well, with scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 25-14. Katrina Newman recorded 10 kills and four ace serves and Jenna Zymslony was not far behind with six kills and two ace serves. Jessica Newman recorded 19 set assists.


Though it took four games with three of them being extremely tight, the Carlton was victorious over Cook County to advance to 2-0 on their young season. The bulldogs defeated Cook County by game scores of 25-16, 23-25, 29-27 and 25-19. Taylor Carpenter had nine kills in the winning effort.


Cloquet rebounded from a tough five game loss to Barnum in a big way by traveling to Duluth Central and picking up the four game victory. The Jacks were victorious by scores of 25-14, 25-15, 20-25 and 25-8. Katie Schultz and Maddie Kiehn each had 10 kills for the Jacks, while Gloria Ohaju had six kills and an amazing 12 blocks in the losing effort for Central.


By defeating Virginia in four games, the Esko Eskomos have now won three straight games and are 4-1 on the season. Game scores were 25-15, 25-20, 25-26 and 25-17. The Eskomos were led by Kayla Handevidt with 20 kills, 7 ace serves and 9 blocks.


The Proctor rails had a rough night, falling to Duluth Marshall in three games by scores of 19-25, 12-25 and 9-25.


Hermantown fell to rival and perennial power Grand Rapids, but not before putting up a scrappy four-game fight. The Hawks ended up losing by scores of 18-25, 17-25, 25-21 and 14-25. Samantha Kallberg had 10 kills in the losing effort for the Hawks.


The Rebels of Moose Lake-Willow River proved unfriendly hosts to Two Harbors, downing the Agates in three games of 25-20, 25-16, and 25-15. Sheenagh Caroline led the Rebels with 6 kills, 4 ace serves, and 11 digs. Miranda Jacobson led the offense’s winning efforts with 22 set assists.


In the final game of the night, Wrenshall fell to McGregor by scores of 25-18, 25-16 and 25-3.
