Two power play goals by the Elk River Elks in the last four minutes of the game helped them pick up a 4-4 tie with Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in girls hockey at Northwoods Credit Union Arena on Friday night in Cloquet.

Elk River scored the lone goal of the first period when Julia Miller scored at 14:09 to make it 1-0. Then at 7:05 of the second period the Elks scored again, this time by Mandy Sailor as they took a 2-0 lead.

The Lumberjacks roared to life at 9:43 when Mikayla Baker scored from Makayla Langenbrunner and Karina Johnson to pull CEC within 2-1. Emily Gustafson went coast-to-coast at 15:22 of the second period to tie the game at 2-2 and that’s how things ended after two periods of play.

The Lumberjacks took the lead at 4:04 of the third period when Carley Esse scored from Gustafson to make it 3-2. At 4:52 the Jacks added yet another goal when Kailey Buhr connected from Esse and Mackenzie Roy and CEC was up 4-2.

With about five minutes remaining in regulation the Lumberjacks took a five-minute major for checking from behind and the Elks jumped on their chance by scoring goals at 13:40 and 14:30 with the extra attacker to tie the game at 4-4, sending it to overtime. Neither team managed a goal in the extra session.

Alyssa Acheson finished with 35 saves for the Jacks, while Jessica Edwards recorded 24 saves for the Elks.

The Jacks are now 3-6-1 and will host St. Francis on Tuesday night.
