MOOSE LAKE- Thursday night the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels won their second game of the season as the Rebels knocked off the Floodwood Polar Bears in a Polar League Conference matchup by a final score of 69-58.

The Rebels, who have implemented a new offense this season have used a more balanced attack so far on this young season and have the offense running like it is in mid-season form.

“We have a lot of athletes on this season’s team” Head Coach Neil Dickinson told Northland Sports Online. “We changed the offense this year so we have worked very hard and the kids have done a great job of learning the offense; but even more, they have worked twice as hard on the defensive end.”

The Rebels started slow on Thursday night as the Polar Bears opened up to an early 13-7 lead behind some strong play from Floodwood’s Ross Schminski. The Rebels would respond in a big way as the Rebels went on a 17-0 run to build up a 24-13 lead and the Rebels would never look back.

The Rebels went on to a 34-23 lead at the break, it could have been a 14 point lead but it was Reilly Brensdorf who hit a long range three pointer to make it the 11 point difference at the break.

The second half saw the Rebels extend their lead early in the half, but the Polar Bears would give a run midway through the second half, which cut the lead to two at 41-39; but the Rebels used great defense and timely rebounding to pull away for the 11 point win.

Michael Pender led the Rebels with 14 points on the night he was followed closely by Tony Adamczak who finished with 12 and it was Ike Pederson chipping in with 11 points off the bench for the Rebels. Adamczak also finished with 11 rebounds on the night for Moose Lake-Willow River.

The Polar Bears were led by Ross Schminski and Reilly Brensdorf, who each had 17 points on the night. Willow Christenson finished with 10 points on the night for Floodwood as the Polar Bears start the season 0-1, and they look to rebound Friday night against Wrenshall.

Moose Lake-Willow River improves to 2-0 on the season and they will be back in action again on Friday night when they will face the Cromwell Cardinals at home and next Tuesday they play at Wrenshall.
