Saturday saw the C-E-C Lumberjacks host the twin cities powerhouse Academy of Holy Angels in a boys’ soccer matchup. Although Cloquet led 1-0 at halftime, the Stars proved too much, wearing down the Lumberjacks to clutch the 3-1 victory.

Playing a team at the Holy Angels caliber was not the perfect way for sophomore Jarad Weeks to make his varsity debut in goal. Weeks was forced into duty because senior net minder Derek Schrecengost broke a bone in his hand in Friday’s game against Duluth Denfeld. The injury will cause Schrecengost to be out of action for approximately four weeks. Weeks filled in admirably, keeping C-E-C in the game by making 10 saves in the first half alone.

Lumberjack head coach Archie Clark had nothing but praise for his young goalkeeper, telling NSO, “He performed very well today, you saw him out there. It doesn’t appear that we missed a beat.”

Nick Anderson opened the scoring for C-E-C with an unassisted goal just nine minutes into the game. Although played at a rapid pace, neither team would score for the remainder of the first half. Holy Angel’s goalkeeper Ryan Ablan made five first-half saves to the ten of Weeks.

The Stars managed to tie the game at 1-1 in the 43rd minute when Joe Laue scored with an assist to Tyler Warmack.

The game remained tied until the 62nd minute when Aaron Haworth put Holy Angels up 2-1, with Manney Delaluz assisting on the goal. The same Delaluz to Hayworth combination would hook up again ten minutes later in the 72nd minute to give the Stars a two goal lead at 3-1, handing the Jacks their first loss of the season.

Weeks had seven saves in the second half for a game total of 17 while Ablan had 2 second-half saves for a total of 7.

Although the Lumberjacks lost 3-1, Coach Clark was very happy with the performance of his squad. “Our confidence level went up big time today. Holy Angels is a perennial state contender, they have big senior bodies that just wore us down in the second half…I was really proud of the way our team played today.”

With the loss, C-E-C is now 2-1-1 on the year. The Jacks will be back in action Tuesday when they host the Golden Bears of Eveleth-Gilbert.
