CEC Defeats Duluth Denfeld 2-1 In Boys Soccer

CLOQUET – In a morning matinee, The C-E-C boys soccer team hosted the Denfeld Hunters at 10:00am Friday at Hilltop field. One would think that given the start time, the action would start slow with it increasing as the game went on. However, both teams came ready to go with all of the scoring taking place in the first half.
The Lumberjacks came away with a 2-1 victory.

Sam Cook kicked off the scoring in the 16th minute by putting the ball past Duluth Denfeld goalie Jarad Overby with the assist going to Josiah Barrett.

C-E-C’s 1-0 lead would not last long however, when senior forward Kyle Langley scored for Denfeld, tying the score at 1-1 just two minutes after Cook’s goal.

With four minutes remaining in the half, Dan Toivonen scored what turned out to be the game winning goal for C-E-C. His goal, placed in the 36th minute, was assisted by Kevin Kulaszewicz.

C-E-C outshot Denfeld 8-5 in the half as Derek Shrecengost came up with four saves and Overby tallied six saves for Denfeld.

The second half was, at times, played at a furious pace with both teams having their chances to score. Goalies for both squads made some nice saves, keeping the 2-1 halftime score as the final margin of victory. Shrecengost made five second-half saves for the Jacks for a game total of nine. Overby, meanwhile, stopped two shots for the Hunters and finished the game with eight saves.

With the win, C-E-C remains undefeated with a 2-0-1 record on the season.

Soccer fans will be treated to a doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, September 5th when the Academy of Holy Angels comes to town. The C-E-C boys play at 11:00 am followed by the
Cloquet girls, who take the field at 1:00pm.

Denfeld will be back in action on Tuesday, looking to improve on their 1-3 record, when they travel to Proctor to take on the Rails.
