The Carlton Bulldogs and the North Woods Grizzlies, the two tops seeds in Section 7A girls volleyball tournament both advanced Wednesday night in the Section 7A second round match-ups around the Northland Wednesday night.


The Bulldogs pulled off the 3-0 victory at home over Duluth Marshall to advance to the section quarterfinals in Proctor Friday night. The Bulldogs will face Cromwell who recorded a minor upset Wednesday as the #4 seeded Cardinals knocked off #5 seeded Cook County by a 3-1 score in Grand Marias.


The other quarterfinal match up Friday night in Proctor will feature the defending section champion Cherry Tigers, who beat Chisholm 3-1 Wednesday night. The Tigers will take on Little Fork-Big Falls, who defeated Mountain Iron-Buhl also by the 3-1 margin.


North Woods, the section’s other number one seed advanced to the section quarterfinals with a sweep over the Floodwood Polar Bears. The Grizzles will take on the Hornets of Hill City who also recorded a 4 vs. 5 seed upset Deer River Wednesday night.


The other sectional quarterfinal will have South Ridge taking on North East Range. The Panthers swept Silver Bay Wednesday night and it was North East Range getting past the Ely Timberwolves by the same 3-0 margin.


North Woods and Hill City Hill meet at 6 pm at Eveleth High School Friday night. In the second match of the evening, it will have South Ridge and the Night Hawks playing at 7:30 pm. The winners of all the quarterfinal contests will meet in Virginia on Halloween night. The Section Finals will take place on Saturday November 3rd at UMD.
