Thunder Athletes Named Players of the Week

Two Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Thunder Football players earned Minnesota College Athletic Conference Northern Division Player of the Week honors for games played September 21-22, 2012.


Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Thunder running back James Victor Griffin was named Minnesota College Athletic Conference Northern Division Offensive Player of the Week for games played on the weekend of September 21-22, 2012. Officially, Griffin carried the ball 36 times for 154 yards and one touchdown in the Thunder’s 17-0 victory over Northland Technical and Community College in Cloquet last Saturday.


Through five games, Griffin leads the MCAC in rushing with 632 yards on 146 carries (4.3 yards average per carry) and has scored five touchdowns. Griffin is a freshman from McDonough, Georgia, and is a graduate of Ola High School.


Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College Thunder placekicker/punter Anthony Makela was named Minnesota College Athletic Conference Northern Division Special Teams Player of the Week for games played on the weekend of September 21-22, 2012. Makela was 2-for-2 on points after attempts and kicked a 35-yard field goal in the 17-0 victory over Northland Technical and Community College.


Through five games, Makela is 2-for-2 on field goal attempts and 13-of-14 on extra point attempts to lead all kickers in the Northern Division. Anthony is a freshman from Hartselle, Alabama, and is a graduate of Hartselle High School. This is the second Player of the Week honor Makela has earned this season; he also received the award for his outstanding punting performance in a loss to Rochester Technical College during the third week of the season.


The 2012 Thunder Football team is in first place of the Minnesota College Athletic Conference Northern Division. The Thunder travel to Hutchinson, Minnesota on Saturday for a game against undefeated Ridgewater Community College. Ridgewater is currently the first-place team in the Southern Division of the conference.

The Minnesota College Athletic Conference is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association. The football conference includes 10 teams which are divided geographically into Northern and Southern Divisions.
