Just how good is the Virginia girls tennis team? Well, on Monday the Blue Devils split their team and still had enough fire power to knock off both Cloquet and Hermantown. Against Cloquet the Blue Devils came out with a 4-3 win, against Hermantown they took a 6-1 victory.

In their match against Cloquet-Esko-Carlton the Blue Devils kicked things off with a win at #1 singles by Taylor Gunderson who defeated Rachel Collier 6-0, 6-3. Jess Berglund took a 6-0, 6-2 win over CEC’s Katelyn Litke at #2 singles and at #3 singles the Blue Devils notched their third singles victory when Jenn Virant defeated Lora Chalich. CEC’s lone single win was when Rosalie Lundquist took her #4 singles match 6-1, 6-3 over Brooke Pontinen.

In doubles play the Jacks took two of three matches starting at #1 when Alyssa Acheson and Reilly Kedrowski downed Alayna Start and Hailey Greenwaldt 6-2, 6-3. The Lumberjacks also won at #3 doubles when Jade Alvillar and Johanna Harms knocked off Angela Larson and Mailee Peterson 6-2, 6-0. Virginia took the #2 doubles match when Jill Westerberg and McKenzie Phelps downed CEC’s Brianne Baker and Abby Wangen.

The Hermantown Hawks also struggled to find victories over the Blue Devils in their match. Hermantown’s only win came at #3 doubles when Elizabeth Heehn and Jordan Cuva downed Callie Mauston and Alex Saxhaug 6-3, 6-4.

Madelyn Miller of Hermantown was shut out 6-0, 6-0 by Brylee Seitz of Virginia at #1 singles. The same result occurred in #2 singles when Danielle Luke fell to Amy Rice. At #3 singles it was Annie Marcella taking a 6-1, 6-2 win over Hermantown’s Bailey O’Connell. Finally, at #4 singles it was Virginia’s Maria Stokes-Cerkvenick knocking off Stephanie Collins 6-3, 6-4.

The Hawks also dropped doubles matches and #1 and #2 doubles. At #1, the Hawks team of Anna VanDeelen and Mariah Ruhanen fell 5-7, 6-3 and (14-12) to Kelsey Norlander and Juliann Perala. The Hermantown #2 doubles team of Elizabeth Carlson and Brianna Garcia-Meyers dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to Julie DeVries and Greta Kolstad.
