ESKO – Playing in the practice gym because the main gymnasium is being refurbished didn’t seem to bother the Esko volleyball team on Tuesday night. The Eskomos picked up their first win of the season with a 3-00 decision over Wrenshall.

The Eskomos won by scores of 25-9, 25-17, and 25-15. In the first game Esko built up an insurmountable 15-3 lead before a small run brought the score to 16-8 before the Eskomos got things closed out.

The second game was a bit of a different story as the young Wrenshall team shook off the jitters and opened the match with a 3-0 lead. The Wrens led at several times during the match which featured five different tie scores. Finally tied at 11-11 Esko went on a 6-2 run to create some distance and go on to the 15-17 win.

The upstart
Wrens never trailed in the third match up to the 10-10 mark when Esko once again put together a 10-3 run which the inexperienced Wrens couldn’t stem, despite a timeout in the middle of the run. Esko then closed out the match by a 25-15 score to pick up the three game sweep.

“These girls are a lot of fun to coach” stated first year Wrenshall Head Coach Andrea Ruth. “They are smart, athletic, hard working and just all around good kids.” The Wrens volleyball program appears much on the rise no seniors on the roster and four freshman starters.

The Eskomos were led by Christina Houser with eight kills and seven ace serves. Michaela Rust added four kills and Karinna Houser added three kills. Kalyyn Knutson chipped in with five digs and Hailey Salo added two ace blocks.
Wrenshall was led by Tatum Swanson with three kills and two blocks while Cloe Swanson added foru set assists.

Esko is now 1-1 on the season after a season opening road loss to Hermantown. They will look to make it two in a row when they host Cook County on Thursday at 6:30pm

Wrenshall, who recently won their first match since the 2009 season is now 1-2 on the early season and will be back in action on September 11 when they Host Lakeview Christian Academy, the team they beat 3-0 on Aug 30 of this year.
