Even though they were a little sluggish out of the gate the Cloquet girls soccer team revved things up and notched four first half goals on their way to a 6-2 victory over Duluth Marshall on the road in Duluth. Leading the way was Miaja Doran with the first half pure hat trick, the first hat trick of her career.

“We started a little slow,” said Cloquet coach Dustin Randall. “But we built to a good first half.”

Cloquet got things going in the 22nd minute on a goal by Emily Rikkola with Rebecca Hammond assisting and it was 1-0. Following the Rikkola goal it was Doran adding her hat trick in the 27th, 35th and 37th minutes of the first half. The first of Doran’s goals was assisted by Leah Bodiegheimer, the second was assisted by Anna Fossen and the third by Rikkola. The Jacks led it 4-0 at the break.

To the credit of the Hilltoppers they tried hard to get back in the game with a pair of back-to-back goals to start the second half. The first Marshall goal was scored in the 51st minute by Hannah Carpenter and the second was scored four minutes later by Megan Coughlan. However, the Jacks responded with goals from Chelsea Baublitz and Fossen in the 58th and 69th minute. Baublitz’ goal was assisted by Carley Esse and Fossen’s goal was assisted by Kristi Konietzko. Fossen’s goal was
the first varsity goal for the freshman forward.

The Lumberjacks outshot the Hilltoppers 20-3 with Kenzie Rathe making three saves to get the win.

Cloquet is now 2-3 on the season, with all three losses to Twin Cities area schools. The Jacks have lost to cities powerhouse programs Rosemount, Holy Angels Academy and to Benilde-St. Margarets.

The Jacks will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Hermantown to take on the Hawks in an important Lake Superior Conference battle.
