The Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys soccer team made its first state appearance last season. While the Lumberjacks lost a lot of talent to graduation, they still should be a serious contender in the sectionals this year. After opening with a 2-1 home loss to Rosemount, the Lumberjacks came back with a vengeance against Superior on Monday as they beat the Spartans 3-0.

CEC scored a pair of first half goals with the first coming at the 16 minute mark when Josh Carlson scored an unassisted tally. In the 40th minute it was Ben Pietsch scoring on a nifty pass from Westin Michaud and CEC was up 2-0 at the break.

The Lumberjacks closed out the scoring on a goal in the 70th minute by Alex DeRocher with Michaud adding the assist for his second point of the game.

Halen Danielson made just one save for the Lumberjacks in posting the shutout, while Spartan goalies Jarrett Byrnes and Matthew O’Shaugnessy combined to make 18-saves on 21 shots by the Lumberjacks.

The win improved the Jacks record to 1-1 on the season and will travel to Biwabik to take on the Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bears on Thursday.
