It must have seemed as if there was an offensive volcanic explosion at Duluth Marshall on Tuesday afternoon when the Hilltoppers and Hermantown Hawks combining for five second half goals in Marshall’s 3-2 victory in boys soccer.

After a scoreless first half the fireworks started when Bryan Wines slammed in a goal in the 53rd minute giving the Hilltoppers a 1-0 lead. Kori Ochs responded with a goal for the Hawks a minute later to tie the game at 1-1. Marshall responded with back-to-back goals in the 59th minute and the 62nd minute. The goal in the 59th minute was scored by Matthew Klassen and the second goal was scored by Wines for his second goal of the game. Wines second tally gave the Hilltoppers a 3-1 lead.

Hermantown managed to pull to within a goal when Alex Jenny scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute to cut the lead to 3-2.

While both teams were scampering for scoring opportunities the goalies were scrambling to keep the ball out of their respective nets. Hilltopper goal Joey Gail finished with 3 saves on 5 shots and Hawks goalie Josh Lenard was called on to make 6 saves on 9 shots.

Marshall improved to 2-1 overall with the win and 1-0 in the Lake Superior Conference.
