Proctor Closes Out Regular Season With A 5-Inning Win

Jack Nikko and Paul Hegstrom combined on a two-hit shutout as Proctor defeated Crosby-Ironton 10-0 in five innings in a non-conference baseball game at Proctor on Friday.

Nikko (2-1, 2.15 ERA) pitched three innings for the win. He allowed two hits and no walks with four strikeouts. Hegstrom threw two perfect innings in relief of Nikko with two strikeouts.

Ian Scherber set a new school record by playing in his 81st career game. Tyler Pionk played in 80 games for the Rails from 2008-2011.

Eighth-grader Matt Morris ended the game on a walk-off RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning in his first varsity at bat.

The first four batters scored for Proctor in the bottom of the first inning. The Rails scored four more runs in the second inning to make the score 8-0 after two complete innings. Proctor added another run in the third, and Joe Carter scored on Morris’s hit in the fifth.

Jesse Scanlon was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI, and a stolen base. Ryan McCarthy was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Ben Nelson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Evan Scherber was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Michael Hoge was 2-for-2 for Crosby-Ironton.

Hoge was the losing pitcher. He allowed nine earned runs on nine hits and two walks in two innings pitched, with no strikeouts.

Proctor (12-6) hosts Eveleth-Gilbert in a first-round Section 7AA Playoffs game on Wed., May 30, at 4:30 p.m.
