The Hermantown Hawks girls softball team remained unbeaten Thursday as the Hawks defeated the Superior Spartans in a Lake Superior Conference contest by a score of 6-3 Thursday afternoon in Hermantown.


The Hawks used three two run innings to knock off the Spartans and remain unbeaten and atop the state softball rankings in Class AA. The Hawks scored two runs in the first inning to take the early lead Thursday at 2-0.


Superior cut the lead in half in the top of the second and made the score 2-1, Hermantown responded again in the bottom of the third inning scoring two more runs on Katie Thun’s two run no doubt blast over the left center field fence to make it 4-1. In the fifth inning they added two more runs to make it 6-1.


Superior added one last threat in the top of the sixth inning adding two runs to cut the lead to 6-3 but that would be as close as the Spartans came as Hermantown picks up the win at home on Thursday afternoon.

Thun was the winning pitcher on Thursday; she pitched seven innings, allowed six hits, three runs, while striking out 12 Spartan batters.


Haley Wargin was 3-4 Thursday with a RBI and a run scored. Celine Francisco added two hits for Hermantown and she also scored a run. Megan Willis was 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI’s, Arianna Hess was also 2-3 with a double, and JoAnna Carlson was 3-3 with a run scored.


The Spartans were led by Taylor Thompson who finished 3-3 Thursday with two runs scored. Taylor Nelson was 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI’s, Tailor Schuster was also 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Kaitlyn Mergen added the other hit for Superior.


Taylor Thompson was the losing pitcher on the afternoon for Superior as she gave up 14 hits on the afternoon, she allowed six runs, while striking out 5 Hermantown batters, and she allowed one walk to Hermantown.


With the win Thursday, Hermantown improves to 5-0 overall on the season and they will look to make it six wins to start the season as they will face the Esko Eskomos at home on Friday in a sectional match-up Friday afternoon.
