St. Scholastica Softball Wins 17 Straight Games

The St. Scholastica softball team has now won 17 straight games in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference with a pair of victories today, 9-1 over Bethany Lutheran and 7-2 over Martin Luther College, at the UMAC Crossover held at Northland College.


In game one, the Saints and Vikings (13-23) each scored runs in the opening inning to be knotted up at 1-1. The Saints would add eight unanswered runs in the third thru fifth innings. The bats found their mark in the fifth inning for the Saints as they cruised to a 9-1 victory in five innings.


Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) had another strong appearance on the mound allowing only four hits while striking out seven batters to pick up her 16th win on the season.


Offensively, Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis. /Ashland HS) was 3-for-3 with three runs batted in and a run scored. Kali Carlson (Duluth, Minn/Duluth Central HS) and Emily Schiro (Brooklyn Park, Minn. /Armstrong HS) each scored twice and combined for four hits. Two other Saints had two hits apiece with three other batters having a hit as well.


In game two, the Saints met Martin Luther (8-20) for the second day in a row, with the Saints plating four runs in the sixth inning to pull away from the Knights as the Saints went onto win 7-2, the same score as the day before.


Jordan Spiering (Mounds View, Minn. /Irondale HS) returned to the mound for the Saints, scattering nine hits and striking out two batters. Spiering has not pitched in two weeks.


Offensively, the Saints were led by Merryssa Tiedeman (Zumbrota, Minn/Zumbrota-Mazeppa HS) and Molly Jazdzewski (Duluth, Minn. /Duluth Central HS) with two hits and two runs scored apiece. Theresa Tauer (Plymouth, Minn. /Wayzata HS) had two hits as well with a team-high two runs batted in. Three other Saints had a hit apiece.


The Saints (27-8, 18-1 UMAC) will continue play at the UMAC Crossover on Saturday with two games scheduled for 10 a.m. against Presentation College and a 2 p.m. game against Minnesota-Morris.
