The Barnum High School has lost its third coach this spring as long time volleyball coach Corina Newman turned in her letter or resignation last Thursday, April 19th. Newman joins the list of Barnum coaches needing to be replaced before next season begins. Long time girls basketball coach Randy Myhre retired and football coach Kevin Hayley resigned earlier this spring.

Newman had been with the Barnum volleyball program for 16 seasons, the last eight of those as the head coach of the Bombers. Newman compiled a 103-70 record over those last eight seasons. She helped resurrect the program from one of the teams in the Polar League that was near the end of the conference standings, to one perennially at or near the top of the standings.

Newman helped lead the Bombers to the conference championship in 2010, dethroning long time champions Esko and Moose Lake Willow River, who had both dominated the conference for many seasons. Newman also helped direct the Bombers to their first ever section semi-final appearance in 2010 against Nevis.

Newman told Northland Sports Online “I had a meeting with all my players last Thursday and told them of my decision.” Newman added “The girls were disappointed and were sad, but I did tell them I am still in Barnum and if they ever need help I would be there to assist” Newman mentioned “16 years is a long time coaching, I love coaching, but it was time!”

Newman’s long run as volleyball coach will be missed, her hard work and dedication to the volleyball program was noticed and appreciated by many throughout the area, which extended well past just the Barnum area. Newman also had the opportunity to coach her two daughters Katrina and Jessica who are both now attending UMD and both are playing basketball.

Northland Sports Online would like to thank Corina for all of her hard work and dedication to the program throughout the years. Her hard work will truly be missed by players, parents, fans, media, and those throughout the community.
